Our Approach to Custom Color Vinyl Windows

The material we use to build our frames and sashes is a solid, high-quality virgin vinyl in three colors: white, beige, or clay. By design, we choose light-colored vinyl materials for our window and door systems. That’s because darker colors tend to absorb heat, which can cause warping, peeling, or chalking over time. By offering a factory-applied paint finish, we can achieve the look you want without impacting your desired performance.

The finish we use on our custom color vinyl windows is specifically formulated for vinyl. It is designed for commercial and residential applications and has a 10-year warranty against peeling, flaking, and fading. The factory prep process includes priming, cleaning, and masking the windows before paint application, followed by a heat-cured finish. You can be confident that your windows and doors are professionally painted, using the right products, in a controlled factory environment.

Our paint process gives you hundreds of color options, including the ability to color-match your shutters or interior trim, like black framed windows on your house. More importantly, we give you the option of having a different color on the exterior than on the interior.

If you want the street appeal of a black exterior window frame AND the clean, casual look of a white interior – we can do that! Plus, we ensure all your decorative grids and hardware match perfectly with black trim window options.

Common Questions on the Black Window Trend

Do black windows add value to your home?

Yes, black windows can enhance your home’s value by providing a modern and attractive aesthetic, especially when paired with a contrasting exterior.

Will black windows look good on my house?

Black windows can look stunning on houses, particularly those with a modern, minimalist, or industrial design. They offer a high-contrast appeal against light-colored exteriors.

Are black frame windows more expensive?

While the cost may vary, black frame windows are generally comparable in price to other color options. The added value in aesthetics often justifies the investment.

Are you looking for ways to fix a broken window? As a replacement window company, we talk to homeowners every day who ask the same question: “Can you help me fix my broken window?” Unfortunately, there’s no right answer. It really depends on the situation. To help, we’ve put together this short Window Repair or Window Replacement in Virginia Guide!

Identifying your window problem is the first step to finding an affordable and effective “fix.” In our experience, the top three reasons we get called for window issues are:

Windows That Don’t Open or Close Properly

Windows With Broken Glass

Windows That are Foggy or Cloudy

Now that you’ve identified the issue with your window, let’s move on to what you can do about it! (Although CVP Windows & Doors does not repair or warranty other manufacturers’ windows, we can replace them, if that’s what you choose to do.).

Window Problem #1: Your Windows Don’t Open or Close Properly

To keep your windows in good working order, we recommend cleaning them and operating them at least once a year. Windows are meant to be opened and used! If your windows are stuck, clear away any dirt and debris that might be getting in the way. Then try lightly spraying visible hardware with a silicone dry lubricant spray.

Easy does it. Try opening your windows without using too much force. If they still don’t budge, the operating hardware may have failed. Here’s what that means:

o In single or double hung windows, the “balance” is a mechanism that supports the weight of the window sash as it is raised and lowered. The balance is also what holds the window sash securely in an open position. You may have a broken balance system if your window sashes are difficult to raise or lower, or worse, fall down when you try to open them.

o In casement windows, a crank operating system is what allows the window to swing open and closed. This system consists of a hand crank and a movable arm integrated in the window frame. If subjected to too much weight and pressure, crank gears can strip or fail. And sometimes crank handles just get lost.

How to Repair: Unfortunately, finding replacement parts for a broken window can be tough. Manufacturers use proprietary hardware, so you won’t find what you need at the local hardware store. Try to identify the brand and model number for your window. With this information, you may be able to contact the manufacturer or search online for replacement parts.

When to Replace: Look at it this way: an inoperable window is a safety hazard. Window sashes that don’t stay up can fall and cause injury. Windows that don’t lock properly are susceptible to break-ins. And in the event of an emergency, an inoperable window might prevent you from escaping your home. These are all important reasons to replace any windows in your home that don’t operate properly.

Window Problem #2: You Have Broken Window Glass

Broken window glass happens! If an object hits the window with enough force, it’s going to break, simple as that. Many of today’s windows are double-pane, meaning they are composed of two pieces of glass sealed together to form one insulated glass unit, often referred to simply as an “IG.” In most cases of a window break, one surface of glass breaks while the other remains intact.
Unfortunately, to fix the glass in a broken double-pane window (even if one piece is intact) you’ll need an entirely new replacement IG.How to Repair: If your windows are still under the manufacturer’s warranty, reach out to see if glass breakage coverage is provided. Some manufacturers offer an IG replacement service.

If your windows aren’t under warranty, no worries. Reach out to a glass company in your area. Many offer window reglazing services. When you call and schedule a repair, these companies visit your home, measure your broken window, and order a replacement IG. They’ll return to your home with the new IG and replace the glass in your existing window frame.

The process of ordering and replacing a glass IG unit in a broken window can take several weeks. While you’re waiting, be sure to cover the broken glass and secure the window to prevent injury or damage to your home.

When to Replace: Typically, a replacement IG is the most cost and time-efficient method for repairing broken window glass. However, if the window frame is broken, or if the window is generally in disrepair, an IG replacement may not be possible or cost effective. In this case, the next best option is replacing the entire window.

Window Problem #3: You Have Foggy or Cloudy Windows

Do you have cloudy windows that never seem to clear? You’re probably dealing with seal failure and condensation in your double-pane windows.

As described above, double-pane windows have an insulated glass unit (IG) inside the frame. This unit consists of two pieces of glass separated by a spacer. In older windows, this space was just filled with dry air. In the 1990’s, IG manufacturers began filling the space between the glass with an insulating gas (typically argon). Newer windows with argon-filled IGs are more resistant to seal failure, but it can still occur.

When an IG seal fails, moist environmental air seeps into the IG. Changing temperatures cause moisture to condense on the glass and evaporate. Over time, this cycle leaves a hazy residue.

Like broken glass, seal failure cannot be fixed. Replacing the IG is the only solution.

How to Repair: If your windows are still under the manufacturer’s warranty, reach out to see if seal failure coverage is provided. Some manufacturers offer an IG replacement service.

If your windows aren’t under warranty, a glass company in your area can help. Many offer window reglazing services. These companies visit your home, measure your foggy window, and order a replacement IG. They’ll return to your home with the new IG and replace the glass in your existing window frame.

When to Replace: Seal failure occurs in older windows and worsens with time. It’s a sign that your windows aren’t as energy-efficient as they used to be. If you plan to stay in your home for the foreseeable future, you may want to invest in replacement windows. You’ll solve your cloudy window problem and get the benefit of improved comfort and energy-efficiency.

Is the high heat and humidity in Coastal Virginia making your patio or screened-in porch unbearable? Vinyl windows and sliding patio doors offer an affordable solution! If you’re ready to start planning your project, we have tips for choosing the best windows and finding an installation contractor with sunroom conversion expertise.

1) Choose Energy Star®-Rated Sunroom Windows for Comfort and Energy Efficiency

Sunroom windows and patio doors should allow natural light in, while keeping the heat of the sun out. A good way to accomplish this is by choosing windows with a heat-reflecting, Low-E coating and a double-pane glass unit that is insulated with Argon gas.

At minimum, sunroom windows should carry an Energy Star® rating for energy efficiency. That’s the government standard, however affordable windows are available that exceed these standards. If your sunroom gets a lot of direct sunlight, you can prevent heat gain by choosing a window that is designed with a more energy-efficient SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) rating. Ask your window supplier about these options.

2) Use Vinyl Windows to Keep Your Sunroom Conversion Affordable and Low-Maintenance

Vinyl is a great material for windows used in a sunroom for a few reasons. First, it’s very affordable compared to other options, as well as being versatile. Vinyl does an excellent job of resisting humidity, making it an energy efficient option that requires very little maintenance.

Kick back and enjoy the ease of a sunroom that’s built to last and easy to care for.

3) Customize Your Sunroom with Different Window & Door Styles

Picture Windows: If you’re looking to improve your view, picture windows are a great option for your sunroom. These large windows will frame your surrounding scenery like a picture frame. Since picture windows are non-operational, they create a clean look without any visible hardware or moving parts.

Double-Hung Windows: Another great option are double-hung windows. These windows open vertically and give you the option to increase ventilation in your sunroom. They are also very easy to clean, because both sashes (framed window glass) can be tilted inwards, letting you clean the exterior of the window without going outside.

Casement Windows: With a hinge on one side, casement windows swing outward and are operable with a hand crank. Like picture windows, they offer a clean look because they are built with a single sash of glass. But they have the added benefit of being opened and closed.

Slider Windows: For wide horizontal openings, slider windows are a great way to maximize your view while also having the ability to open the window.

Sliding glass doors and full-length fixed glass panels provide a full floor-to-ceiling view that is fully customizable for your sunroom. When the weather is nice, open up your patio doors to make your sunroom an open-air venue for eating and entertaining.

Listen as Josh & Dana, homeowners in Yorktown, discuss their experience with CVP Windows & Doors for a room addition and porch enclosure.

4) Get Estimates from Experienced Sunroom Enclosure Companies

You probably still have a lot of questions about converting your patio or sunroom with vinyl windows. Get estimates from several sunroom enclosure companies and choose the one that’s right for you. Take your time and don’t feel pressured into making a quick decision.

If you have an existing sunroom or screened porch that needs windows, a replacement window company like CVP Windows & Doors can help.

If you want a sunroom addition, you’ll need to hire a reputable building contractor.

As a custom manufacturer of high-quality vinyl windows and sliding glass doors, CVP Windows & Doors specializes in a wide range of design options and configurations. Our team can build and install windows and doors in the right sizes and styles to help you achieve your vision of the perfect enclosed sunroom.

Are you considering a front door replacement? Donald and Britt are here to help! We just released a new video called Britt Buys a Door where we discuss the process and options for choosing a new front entry door. Many homeowners are surprised by the number of choices available. Don’t let this deter you! Just read on and watch our video. We have lots of pro tips to help you choose the right replacement front door from an experienced door replacement company like CVP Windows & Doors.

Pro Tip 1: Choose a Front Entry Door Unit in the Right Configuration

Start by choosing a replacement pre-hung door unit in the same configuration as your current front entry door. This helps ensure that your new door unit will fit in your existing opening without reframing. It also makes the installation process a lot more efficient.

Before you can choose a new front entry door, learn what parts comprise your current door unit. A basic replacement front entry door consists of a door slab, frame, and sill. However, many front entry doors also include a sidelight on one or both sides of the door slab and/or a transom above. We highly recommend choosing a pre-hung replacement door unit that includes all the same components as your current front door.

Pro Tip 2: Decide on a Texture and Finish for Your Replacement Door Unit

At CVP, we carry a full line of high-quality fiberglass replacement front entry doors. Our fiberglass front entry doors come in different surface textures, including smooth and wood grain. These doors come unfinished, which means they will need to be painted or stained. (A factory-finished door is available by request for an additional charge.) It’s up to you as the homeowner to decide whether you want to paint or stain the door unit.

Once you know what look you’re going for, you’ll be able to choose a texture and finish to achieve your goals.

Pro Tip 3: Consider the Design and Amount of Glass You Want in Your Replacement Door

The design options available for a replacement front entry door are mind-boggling. Start with the panel designs, add on a wide variety of glass options, and multiply your choices for hardware and accessories. In no time, you’re facing an exponential number of options!

One important decision is the amount of glass you want in your door slab and/or sidelights. Glass panels are available in clear-view, obscure privacy glass, or decorative patterns. The amount of glass in your replacement front entry door is also highly customizable ranging from ¼, ½, ¾ to a full panel length.

The hardware for your door represents another design option. In nearly every case, the handle set for a front entry door is sold separately. However, the hinge hardware on the door IS included and can be customized to different finishes, such as brushed nickel, stainless steel, or brass. You might want to select a handle set at the same time as your front entry door so that you can match the hardware finish.

Pro Tip 4: Consult with a Replacement Front Entry Door Company

We hope this information is helpful to you. If you’re still not sure what you want in a replacement front entry door, don’t worry! Finding design inspiration can be as easy as walking down your street and looking at other homes, or browsing websites like Pinterest or Houzz.

Are you concerned about condensation on your windows? You’re not alone! Many homeowners are perplexed when water droplets appear on their windows. To help clear things up (literally!), we just created a new CVP Q&A video all about window condensation.

What Causes Window Condensation?

If you’ve ever enjoyed a cold drink on a hot day, you know all about condensation. Water droplets form whenever warm, humid air hits a cold surface. It doesn’t matter if that cold surface is a beer glass, a bathroom mirror, or your windows.

On windows, condensation typically appears in one of three places: the interior surface, the exterior surface, or in between the glass. If you want to get to the source of your window condensation, find out where the water droplets are forming.

We like to ask, “Can you touch it?” If the answer is “Yes,” don’t panic! Condensation on the inside or outside surface of your windows is normal and is usually easy to fix.

Interior condensation is usually a sign of high relative humidity. By reducing humidity and improving indoor airflow, you’ll mitigate most causes of window condensation indoors. Try maintaining an indoor humidity level of 25-30% and keep air moving with vents and fans. (0:39)

Exterior condensation is usually caused by the weather. It often appears in the morning during warmer months of the year and is gone by mid-day. (2:40)

If you can’t touch the condensation, it means that water droplets are forming in the gap between the panes of glass on a double or triple-pane window. Unfortunately, this type of window condensation IS a problem.

Condensation between the glass (3:25) is a sign of seal failure. This is an issue that will worsen over time. It starts when a gap in the seal allows moist air to collect between the panes of glass. As temperatures change, moisture in the air will condense, then evaporate. Over time, this cycle leaves a hazy residue on the inside of the glass unit. Eventually, you’ll need to call a professional glazing company to replace the glass unit inside the window or you can call a window replacement company like CVP to replace the entire window.

As Coastal Virginia’s Custom Window & Door Company, you can count on us for excellent customer service and unbeatable product quality. In fact, we offer a 25 year warranty against seal failure on all our windows.

The CVP team is proud to celebrate 20 years of service to builders and homeowners in Coastal Virginia and Northern North Carolina. Our mission remains the same as the day our company was founded in October 2001: To manufacture durable and highly-efficient window and door systems in Newport News, backed by exceptional customer service.

“We’ve grown a team that really cares,” commented president and co-founder Barry Taylor. “CVP is truly a local company. In the beginning, we made a commitment to always do the right thing for our clients and neighbors in Hampton Roads. Today, we have a team of 40 and over 450,000 CVP windows in homes throughout Coastal Virginia.”

“I’ve devoted my entire career to CVP Windows & Doors,” said Donald Peinado, general manager. “If we stay focused on treating our people like family and our customers’ homes as if they’re our own, I know we’ll continue to be successful.”

To celebrate the anniversary, Custom Vinyl Products hosted a party for employees on Friday, October 1, 2021 at the manufacturing facility in the Oakland Industrial Park. During the event, the executive team expressed gratitude for the support of the company’s employees, partners, and clients. “As we reflect on how far we’ve come,” Barry Taylor said, “we also look forward to serving our clients and the community for many years ahead.”

Happy Earth Day 2021! Today is a great day to think about energy efficiency. If your existing windows and doors are poorly insulated, you’re “wasting” energy by using your HVAC system to heat and cool your home more than you need to.

An easy way to think about energy efficiency is energy waste. Where in your home are you unnecessarily wasting energy? Identifying these areas can help you be more green and also save money.

On average, upgrading to EnergyStar rated windows reduce energy use by 12%. For an average home, that averages out to about $300 per year and 200 lbs of CO2 emissions per year – which is equal to 130 gallons of gasoline.
